Academic writing workshop with Ismaeil Fazel

On February 24, PhD candidate Ismaeil Fazel facilitated a workshop on academic writing. The slides can be downloaded here. The links mentioned include:

Personally I would recommend the book Authoring a PhD, partly because it’s a great book on the topic, but also because it’s a written the way a good academic book should be written.

Videos on writing workshop available

Facilitator Alfredo Ferreira has finished a draft of the video tutorial on topics covered in his last writing workshop; it focuses mainly on information packing for tone and flow. It involves about 1–3hrs of tasks (with answers to the tasks included in the video, so it is possible for users to work through it independently).

Academic writing: Second workshop

Packing noun phrases.

Packing noun phrases.

On January 17 Alfredo Ferreira facilitated his second writing workshop, focussing on how students can be more conscious of how they write and how they can effectively formulate sentences in accordance with academic writing styles, without sounding excessively “heavy”. After some introduction and comparison of texts written in different styles, the participants were invited to analyze their own texts using some of the techniques Alfredo had presented. The resounding comment from the feedback form was: “We want more writing workshops!” Writing is paramount in academia, and although the university does have a number of ways to help students with this, many students are not entirely satisfied with the existing offers. Alfredo’s workshop was a small step in addressing this need, and we are lucky to have him.

EDST Student Workshop Crafting a research project: Marrying theory and method

Bathseba Opini (EDST Lecturer) & Marissa Muñoz (EDST PhD Candidate)
Monday, Nov. 18th, 2:30-4:00pm
Ponderosa G Lounge

For many graduate students, their focus of interest is very clear; however, when it comes to designing a study to research their topic, the process can be confusing and quite intimidating. This workshop will provide a roadmap for addressing research design and facilitate a discussion among colleagues that will hopefully assist people in finding their way along the road to research success. The topics discussed will include drafting good research questions, integrating theory and methodology, and working through roadblocks – both conceptual and practical.

EDST Lecturer Bathseba Opini will discuss the process of building a project from the ground up with solid questions, and a good match between theory and methodology. PhD Candidate Marrisa Muñoz will share her experiences of coming to terms with research design from both her MA project and her current work.

This discussion will be useful for people who do not have a great deal of experience with academic research, and also for those who are about to embark upon or are currently mired in the process and would like some hints to keep (or to get) them on track.
