Academic writing: Second workshop

Packing noun phrases.

Packing noun phrases.

On January 17 Alfredo Ferreira facilitated his second writing workshop, focussing on how students can be more conscious of how they write and how they can effectively formulate sentences in accordance with academic writing styles, without sounding excessively “heavy”. After some introduction and comparison of texts written in different styles, the participants were invited to analyze their own texts using some of the techniques Alfredo had presented. The resounding comment from the feedback form was: “We want more writing workshops!” Writing is paramount in academia, and although the university does have a number of ways to help students with this, many students are not entirely satisfied with the existing offers. Alfredo’s workshop was a small step in addressing this need, and we are lucky to have him.
